Cavaterm™ is a minimally invasive treatment for Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding.
Endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure to remove part of the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) to cure non-cancerous disorders that cause abnormal uterine bleeding. Endometrial ablation is the surgical destruction of the lining tissues of the uterus. Endometrial ablation is one type of treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding that is due to a benign (non-cancerous) condition.
It is heated to 65°C–78°C for a period of 15 minutes before being withdrawn from the uterine cavity. The full procedure is described in Hawe et al. (9). The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of day-case Cavaterm plus thermal balloon endometrial ablation in the treatment of therapy-resistant menorrhagia. The study included 220 patients with a mean age of 41 years, mean parity of 2.1 and mean duration of menorrhagia … Key words: Abnormal uterine bleeding, Cavaterm, menorrhagia, thermal balloon endometrial ablation Flowchart of selecting studies for the review Figure 1. Flowchart of selecting studies for the review We conclude that Cavaterm TM plus is a safe and effective treatment for menorrhagia and has good patient acceptability.

The Cavaterm endometrial ablation system consists of a disposable silicone balloon and a central processing unit. The balloon is inserted into the uterine cavity and distended with glycine. It is heated to 65°C–78°C for a period of 15 minutes before being withdrawn from the uterine cavity. The full procedure is described in Hawe et al.

Cavaterm balloon ablation seems a safe and effective option for women with menorrhagia. The procedure does not require additional training and expertise in operative hysteroscopy and compares favourably with established techniques. Fifty patients due to undergo endometrial ablation as a treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding were recruited to assess the efficacy and safety of a new thermal balloon ablation system (Cavaterm).

The Novasure ™ system achieved a statistically significantly higher rate of amenorrhea in this study. Amenorrhoea rates at 12 months in the Cavaterm and endometrial laser ablation groups were 29% vs 39% (P= 0.286), with combined amenorrhoea and hypomenorrhoea rates of 73% vs 69%, respectively. At 12 months, repeat surgery rates were higher in the endometrial laser ablation group (15% vs 12%, P= 0.395). The effect of thermo‐ablation on the duration of menstrual bleeding is shown in Fig. 1.
