Delayed contrast-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) is a noninvasive technique to study cartilage glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in vivo. This study evaluates dGEMRIC in patients with preradiographic degenerative cartilage changes. Seventeen knees in 15 patients (age 35-70) with arthroscopically v …. Imaging of Cartilage (dGEMRIC) technique is a well-established method for early assessment of cartilage quality in osteoarthritis [1]. Using this technique, the distribution of Gd-(DTPA)2− contrast agent in cartilage after intravenous injection is assessed with quantitative T 1 mapping. The estimated T 1 is assumed to be indirectly

Abstract Background: dGEMRIC (delayed Gadolinium Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Image of Cartilage) is a well-established technique for cartilage quality assessment in osteoarthritis at clinical field strengths. The method is robust, but requires injection of contrast agent and a cumbersome examination procedure. Delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) is a validated imaging technique to evaluate cartilage quality in vivo. dGEMRIC is estimating the content of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) which is essential for the biomechanical properties of the cartilage and decreases early in the OA process14. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the mean dGEMRIC indices of the medial compartment between injured and uninjured knees (P<0.007). On average, there was a 13% decrease in the dGEMRIC index of the injured knee compared to the uninjured knee.

Although the duration of the total acquisition time (up to 2 hours) diminishes its attractiveness for clinical use, dGEMRIC has potential value in clinical trials, where it has shown the ability to demonstrate changes in morphologically intact cartilage that may be predictive of progression to OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate the relation between radiograph-based subchondral bone structure and cartilage composition assessed with delayed gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and T2 relaxation time.
